The Xela Memorial Mandala

The Xela Memorial Mandala is a symbol of hope, remembrance, and healing. Dedicated to the people and survivors of Xela, the mandala incorporates elements deeply connected to this region.

Installed on grounds marked by profound human atrocities, this work’s purpose is one of reflection and renewal. The flowers applied in the mandala were collected from a cemetery in Vernon, Alabama, USA where 5 generations of the Hardy family are buried. The flowers, once placed on the graves of loved ones to honor, celebrate, and mourn, are given a second life through this artwork. Joined together again, they continue their purpose of remembering those who came before us while offering space for mourning, connection, and hope.

This permanent work is installed on the grounds of The Intercultural Park in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.
